What is share of voice in SEO?

Share of voice (SOV) in SEO is the proportion of total organic search visibility your brand holds for a defined keyword set, compared to all competitors ranking for those keywords. It is calculated by dividing your estimated organic traffic or impressions for a topic by the total estimated traffic or impressions for all ranking sites combined. A rising share of voice means your content strategy is working. A falling share of voice means competitors are publishing and ranking faster than you.

Share of voice vs keyword rankings

Individual keyword rankings are tactical metrics. Share of voice is a strategic metric. You might rank position 2 for one keyword but have a very small share of voice because you only cover a narrow slice of the total query universe for your topic. A competitor that ranks position 5 for many more keywords may have a much larger share of voice overall. Share of voice tells you whether your overall competitive position is improving or eroding, not just how individual pages are performing.
