Share of Voice
The percentage of total search visibility a brand holds for a defined set of keywords, compared to all competitors ranking for the same queries. A measure of overall market presence in search.
Also known as: SOV, Search share of voice, Organic share of voice
What is share of voice in SEO?
Share of voice (SOV) in SEO is the proportion of total organic search visibility your brand holds for a defined keyword set, compared to all competitors ranking for those keywords. It is calculated by dividing your estimated organic traffic or impressions for a topic by the total estimated traffic or impressions for all ranking sites combined. A rising share of voice means your content strategy is working. A falling share of voice means competitors are publishing and ranking faster than you.
Share of voice vs keyword rankings
Individual keyword rankings are tactical metrics. Share of voice is a strategic metric. You might rank position 2 for one keyword but have a very small share of voice because you only cover a narrow slice of the total query universe for your topic. A competitor that ranks position 5 for many more keywords may have a much larger share of voice overall. Share of voice tells you whether your overall competitive position is improving or eroding, not just how individual pages are performing.
Share of voice in AI search
Share of voice now has two dimensions: Google SERP share of voice and AI answer share of voice. AI share of voice measures how often your brand is cited in AI-generated answers for relevant queries compared to competitors. A brand with strong Google SOV but low AI SOV is increasingly vulnerable as more queries shift to AI-first discovery. Tracking both dimensions gives a complete picture of competitive search visibility.
How to improve share of voice
- Identify keyword gaps where competitors have share and you do not.
- Publish content to fill gaps in high-opportunity topic clusters.
- Update existing content that is losing rankings to competitors.
- Track share of voice over time to measure whether the gap is closing.
- For AI SOV: improve E-E-A-T signals, schema markup, and direct answer formatting on your key pages.
FAQ
Common Questions
SOV is typically calculated as your estimated traffic for a keyword set divided by total estimated traffic for all sites ranking for that set. Some tools use impression data from Search Console. The exact methodology varies by tool, so compare SOV figures only within the same tool.
It depends entirely on the competitiveness of your niche and how broadly you define the keyword set. For a focused niche, 20 to 30% SOV represents strong market presence. For a broad topic with many large competitors, 5 to 10% may be highly competitive. The more meaningful metric is directional: is your SOV increasing or decreasing over time?
Traditional SEO tools track Google SERP SOV. Minineo extends this to AI answer SOV: how often your brand appears in AI-generated answers compared to competitors for the same query set.
