What is a Google AI Overview?
An AI Overview is a block of AI-generated text that appears at the top of Google search results for certain queries. It synthesises information from multiple web pages into a single answer, with cited sources listed below or alongside the generated text. Google began rolling out AI Overviews globally in 2024 and by 2026 they appear on approximately 48% of all searches.
How AI Overviews affect organic traffic
When an AI Overview appears, it occupies significant visual real estate above all organic results. Pew Research data shows only 8% of users click an organic result when an AI Overview is present, compared to higher click rates on queries without one. However, brands cited within the AI Overview itself earn 120% more organic clicks per impression than uncited brands appearing in the organic results below, according to Seer Interactive. Being cited is more valuable than appearing in position 3 below the Overview.
What triggers an AI Overview?
AI Overviews tend to appear for informational queries, how-to questions, definitional queries, comparison queries, and queries that benefit from a synthesised answer rather than a single authoritative source. They are less common on transactional queries (where a user wants to buy something) and navigational queries (where a user wants a specific website).
How to get cited in AI Overviews
- Answer the query directly: Pages that answer the question in the first paragraph are more likely to be extracted.
- E-E-A-T signals: Named author attribution, publication dates, and cited sources increase citation probability.
- FAQ schema: FAQPage markup helps Google identify discrete questions and answers for extraction.
- Structured headings: Clear H2 and H3 headings that match likely sub-queries make extraction easier.
- Factual specificity: Named statistics with sources are more often cited than vague generalisations.
- Existing Google rankings: Pages that already rank in the top 10 for a query are more likely to be cited in the AI Overview for that query.

Common Questions
You can prevent your content from appearing in AI Overviews by adding a nosnippet meta tag. However, this also prevents featured snippets and other rich results, so it is a significant trade-off.
Being cited in an AI Overview delivers more clicks than being uncited on the same query. However, for informational queries where AI Overviews appear frequently, overall click volume to organic results is lower than before AI Overviews existed.
They are different features. Featured snippets show a single extracted passage from one page. AI Overviews synthesise information from multiple pages into a new generated text. A page can appear in one, both, or neither.
Yes. AI Overviews appear on both desktop and mobile Google Search. On mobile, they occupy an even larger proportion of the visible screen.
