What Is This Tool?

What Are Google AI Overviews?

Google AI Overviews (formerly SGE) are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of Google search results for informational queries. Google extracts content from ranked pages and synthesises it into a direct answer. The pages it selects follow specific structural patterns. They are not chosen at random from the top 10.

This tool checks your content against the 7 patterns Google consistently uses when selecting and extracting content for AI Overviews: direct query answer, definition-led opening, optimal paragraph length, list format, question headings, content depth, and trust signals. It is distinct from general AEO. These checks are specific to Google AIO extraction behaviour.

  • Google AI Overviews extract 40-60 word chunks from pages. Paragraphs longer than 80 words are rarely extracted intact
  • Content that answers the query in the first 100 words is significantly more likely to be selected for AIO
  • Definition-led sentences ("X is Y") are the most commonly extracted format in Google AI Overviews
  • Pages with numbered lists and structured steps appear in AIO for how-to queries far more often than prose-only pages
  • Google AIO sources mostly from pages already ranking on page 1. Technical SEO and content quality both matter

How Google Selects Content for AI Overviews

The 40-60 word extraction window

Google AI Overviews do not quote full pages. They extract specific chunks of content. Analysis of AI Overview citations shows that extracted passages are typically 40-60 words long. This means each of your paragraphs should be self-contained and answer a specific point in under 60 words. Long, flowing paragraphs that build context across multiple sentences are much harder for Google to extract cleanly.

Why definition sentences get extracted most often

The single most commonly extracted format in Google AI Overviews is the definition sentence: "[Topic] is [definition]." This format gives Google a clean, complete, citable unit of information. If your page defines its topic in the first paragraph using this structure, it becomes an obvious extraction target. Pages that delay the definition or bury it mid-article are extracted far less frequently.

AI Overviews vs Answer Engine Readiness: the difference

The Answer Engine Readiness Checker scores content for AI citation broadly (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AIO, and Copilot). This tool is specifically calibrated to Google AIO extraction patterns: paragraph chunk length, definition format, table presence for comparisons, and query-term density in the opening. If you are specifically trying to appear in Google search AI Overviews, use this tool. For broader AI visibility, use the Answer Engine Readiness Checker.

FAQs

AI Overview Optimization FAQs

How is this different from the Answer Engine Readiness Checker?
The Answer Engine Readiness Checker covers all AI engines broadly. This tool is calibrated specifically to Google AI Overview extraction patterns: paragraph chunk length, definition-led sentences, query match in the first 100 words, and table detection. Different signals, different purpose.
Does optimising for AI Overviews hurt regular rankings?
No. The patterns that help with AIO (clear structure, direct answers, short paragraphs, lists) also improve regular search rankings and user experience. There is no trade-off.
Can any page appear in Google AI Overviews?
Google predominantly selects AIO content from pages already ranking on page 1 or page 2 for the query. If your page does not rank yet, focus on ranking first. Once ranked, optimise for AIO extraction using the patterns this tool checks.
What score should I aim for?
A score of 75 or above means your content matches most of the patterns Google uses for AIO extraction. Below 50, prioritise fixing the query match and paragraph length issues first. Those have the highest impact.
Does using lists guarantee AIO inclusion?
Not by itself. Lists help for how-to and enumerable queries, but the query must match the list content and the page must already rank. Lists are one signal among seven.
