What Is This Tool?

Measuring Topical Authority, Not Just Keyword Rankings

Topical authority is how comprehensively your site covers a subject, not just whether one page ranks for one keyword. AI answer engines increasingly favour sites that demonstrate depth across a topic - many interlinked pages covering different angles - over a single strong page competing on keywords alone.

This tool reads your sitemap, finds every URL related to your target topic based on its slug, checks whether a dedicated pillar page exists, and scores how many distinct content angles (guides, comparisons, FAQs, definitions, checklists) you cover versus a standard set of angles that build topical depth.

  • Sites with 10+ interlinked pages on a topic are cited by AI engines more often than sites with one long page
  • A dedicated pillar page that matches the topic name directly is a strong topical authority signal
  • Covering a topic from multiple angles (what-is, how-to, comparison, checklist, glossary) signals depth to both Google and AI models
  • This tool infers topics from URL slugs only - pair it with real page titles for a more precise read

How to Use

How to Use the Topical Authority Score

  1. 1
    Enter Your Target Topic

Use the core subject you want to be known for, e.g. "GEO" or "email marketing" - not a long-tail keyword.

  2. 2
    Paste Your Sitemap XML

Go to yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml, select all, copy, and paste it in. A plain list of URLs (one per line) also works.

  3. 3
    Review Your Score and Gaps

See how many related pages you have, whether a pillar page exists, and which common content angles are missing - each gap is a content idea.

What Builds Topical Authority

Breadth: how many related pages exist

One page cannot cover a topic completely. Sites that rank and get cited consistently on a subject usually have a cluster of pages - a pillar plus supporting definitions, guides, and comparisons - all interlinked.

A pillar page as the hub

A single page that directly matches the topic name and links out to every supporting page acts as the hub search engines and AI models use to understand your site's structure around that subject.

Angle coverage over keyword repetition

Ten pages all titled slightly differently around the same exact keyword show less topical depth than eight pages that each answer a different angle - a definition, a how-to, a comparison, a checklist, a glossary term.

FAQs

Topical Authority Score FAQs

How is this different from a keyword rank tracker?
A rank tracker measures where one page sits in search results for one keyword. This tool measures how many pages, and how many different content angles, your entire site has around a broader topic - a structural, site-wide view rather than a single-keyword view.
Why does it use URL slugs instead of page titles?
Sitemaps only reliably expose URLs. Slugs are a solid proxy for topic since most SEO-friendly URLs mirror the page title, but for a more precise score, use a tool that also lets you paste page titles directly.
What counts as a "pillar page"?
A URL whose slug closely matches your target topic itself (for example, /geo/ or /generative-engine-optimization/ for the topic "GEO") rather than a narrower sub-topic page.
What should I do with the missing angles it finds?
Each missing angle (e.g. no comparison page, no glossary term, no checklist) is a concrete content brief - use the Content Brief Generator to turn it into a publish-ready outline.
Does a high score mean I will rank or get cited?
It means your site is structurally well-covered on the topic, which is a strong prerequisite. Actual rankings and AI citations also depend on content quality, backlinks, and domain trust, which this tool does not measure.
