Reading Time and Content Length

Where the 238 WPM figure comes from

The 238 WPM benchmark is based on meta-analyses of reading speed studies for digital text. Silent reading of screens runs slightly faster than print because people tend to skim more. Comprehension falls noticeably above 400 WPM for most readers, which is why speed-reading techniques come with trade-offs.

Content length by type

Top-of-funnel blog posts: 1,200-2,000 words. In-depth guides: 2,500-4,000 words. Product and feature pages: 800-1,500 words. Pillar pages: 5,000+ words. Longer content ranks well for competitive terms and earns more links, but only when the length reflects genuine depth rather than padding.

Reading time and AI citations

AI engines prefer sources that answer questions completely but concisely. A 2,000-word article that is dense with useful information will get cited more often than a 6,000-word article where the same information is spread thin. Use reading time as a prompt to cut aggressively if your draft runs long.
