What Is This Tool?

What Are Open Graph Tags?

Open Graph tags are HTML meta tags, introduced by Facebook in 2010, that tell social platforms what title, image, and description to show when someone shares your page. Without them, platforms guess, and the preview is often wrong or ugly.

The four essential tags are og:title, og:description, og:image, and og:url. Twitter Cards work the same way but use twitter: prefixed tags. This tool generates both sets at once.

  • og:image should be 1200x630px for all major platforms
  • Facebook and LinkedIn cache OG images. Use the platform debug tools to force a refresh after changes
  • og:title can differ from your SEO title. Social titles can be more curiosity-driven
  • Twitter Card images must be publicly accessible, not behind a login

Open Graph Tags: What You Need to Know

og:image size and format

The standard size is 1200x630px (1.91:1 ratio). Facebook, LinkedIn, and WhatsApp all use this. Use JPEG for photos and PNG for images with text. Images hosted on a slow server sometimes fail to load before the platform times out, resulting in a blank preview. Host OG images on a fast CDN.

Your og:title vs. your SEO title

The og:title is what shows in social shares. The <title> tag is what shows in browser tabs and Google SERPs. They should not necessarily be the same. SEO titles should include the keyword; social titles should make someone want to click.

When your preview looks wrong after updating

Social platforms cache OG data aggressively. If your update is not showing, use the debug tools to force a re-scrape: Facebook Sharing Debugger at developers.facebook.com/tools/debug, LinkedIn Post Inspector at linkedin.com/post-inspector. Wait a few minutes after scraping before testing.

FAQs

Open Graph Tag FAQs

What are the four essential Open Graph tags?
og:title, og:description, og:image, and og:url. Without these four, platforms will guess values from your page, often incorrectly.
Do OG tags affect Google rankings?
No, not directly. But they affect how your content looks when shared on social platforms, which drives traffic and can earn links that do affect rankings.
What size should my og:image be?
1200x630px. Minimum 600x315px. Smaller images may render as a small thumbnail rather than a large card.
Do I need OG tags if I use Yoast or Rank Math?
Those plugins generate OG tags automatically from your post title and featured image. You only need to manually add them if you are using a custom theme without an SEO plugin.
